Gently Flowing Shiloah

“Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah…”

Fresh water flows from Solomon’s Pools,
Tumbling over stone and sand,
Pulses to the Temple Mount,
To cleanse tarnished heart and hand.

It streams forth along the courtyard floor,
Through unhewn stone it drains,
Sacrifice of bulls and goats,
Can’t cover my every stain.

Gently flowing Shiloah,
Your sweetness on my tongue,
You called out in the Temple,
Living water if I come.

The last day of the festival,
Amidst the seething throng,
To those with ears and those without,
He sings a life-sustaining song.

“Not from God this crystal spring,”
Holy men cite chapter and verse,
The Fountain of abundant streams,
Quenches souls’ eternal thirst.

Gently flowing Shiloah,
Proceeding from Lamb’s throne,
Spilt out upon Jerusalem’s soil,
To adopt us as His own.

Gently flowing Shiloah,
Scattered and far-flung,
One day Thy praise shall be,
Sung by every tongue.

"Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water."
